The FLEX program Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO) in St. Petersburg will be taking place from June 24-27 and July 01-04. FLEX alumni are encouraged to apply to participate in the American Dream skit and the Alumni Panel. Both of these activities take place on the last day of the PDO cycles. This means June 26 and July 03 respectively. As you all remember, the American Dream skit is intended to reinforce some of the basic lessons learned throughout the PDO: that each American family is unique, and that students should not have concrete expectations of what life in their host family will be like. The Alumni Panel provides a unique opportunity for program participants to learn about the experiences of a range of alumni, and to listen to useful advice. The issues address are the following: 1. Clothing and Hygiene 2. Male/Female Roles 3. Preparing for the US 4. Small Town Life 5. Volunteerism 6. Religion 7. Friendship We are looking for motivated, energetic, and mature alumni to participate and share their experiences with this year's group of FLEX finalists. In order to be considered as a participant in these activities, alumni must complete the attached application form and send to me at: [email protected] by May 30. Applications accepted later than that date will not be accepted. Those alumni selected to participate in this year's PDO will be notified by June 05. Please be advised that this year American Councils will NOT be providing lodging for alumni participating in the panel and skit. This means that participating alumni will not be able to spend the night at the PDO site as in year's past and will need to leave that evening following the conclusion of activities. In addition, if you are an alumnus/a coming from out of town American Councils will NOT reimburse you for your travel expenses. Alumni must be able to participate in both the skit and panel and be at the PDO site from 5 pm to 9 pm on either June 26 or July 03. In addition to completing the attached application, alumni must indicate what PDO cycle they would like to participate in, either the 1st or 2nd (not both), and also be able to participate in a practice alumni panel at the American Councils office a week before the start of the PDO. Those alumni who are not selected to take part in this year's activities may apply for next year's PDO. Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions.
