An art model is a model who poses for any visual artist as part of the creative process. The most common types of art works which use models are figure drawing, figure painting, sculpture, photography and body art, but almost any medium may be used.
Art models are often paid professionals who pose or provide the human figure in a work of art. Though professional, art models are usually anonymous and unacknowledged subjects of the work. Models are often employed for art classes. Usually, but not always, the models are nude or semi-nude.
Traditionally there have been only two kinds of nude art: Fine Art Nude, and Erotica. Both have their place in the world, both have important functions, and both should be respected. But they are not the only options.
Erotica of course has as its main purpose to sexually arouse the viewer. Everything else is secondary. There may be political overtones (as in the works of the Marquis De Sade), there may be aesthetic values or ambitions (as in the Story of O), but the main aim is Sexual in nature. If the primary intention of the work is not sexual arousal, then the work is not erotica, no matter how some may perceive it. The intention may of course be somewhat nebulous and difficult to define, but nevertheless it is there in the mind of the artist.
Fine art nudes are a totally different kettle of fish. Here, the main purpose and ambition of the work is Art, with a capital A. How to judge the purpose and quality of fine art is an issue that is as hotly debated as any in history. Some contend that the essence of fine art is the pleasure of aesthetics. Others assert that it is the attempt to expand the human spirit to new and unknown experiences. Still others maintain that it is an education of humanity in humanity. Perhaps it is all of these. In any event, the subject is usually secondary. It does not matter if the model is attractive or what parts of her/him we see. Sexuality is also secondary to this. In fact many fine art nudes seem to shy away from any hint of sexuality at all. The work may be sexy, but it is not sexual. What matters is the Art.
Women have a unique and unsurpassed beauty, which it is wrong to muddy up or overshadow with too much clothing, make-up or jewellery. A nude photo should be simple. The face and the expression are at least as important as the body. We eschew tattoos and body piercing. Following training and preparation (at our expense), our models are in a good position to command attractive sitting fees.
